Make these easy free-spirited Coachella inspired festival bracelets in under 5 minutes using beads and ribbons with this quick DIY tutorial.

The sun's finally back and festival season is rapidly approaching, kicking off with the legendary Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in just under a months time and boy am I excited!

This years line up spans two weekends and the lineup really is epic with old favourites such as Brand New, Bad Religion, Lykke Li,  St. Lucia, Marina & the Diamonds and Pete Tong right up there with our new music crushes Milky Chance, George Ezra, Royal Blood, Vance Joy and Gorgon City

OMG I wanna be there so badly! *sigh*

When it comes to festival style, I'm in my element... Before it hit the mainstream it was my teenage inspiration... lashings of beautiful boho draped in beads and bracelets, old Woodstock style, all topped off with high end contemporary pieces and a splash of indie glam.

I don't keep my festival bracelets on as now with some of them dating back to the early 2000's, it makes me feel old but I do love the bohemian ribbon flyaway look of these entry pass wristbands.

With that in mind, I was inspired to make my own.

Here are two super quick (less than 5 mins a piece) and impossibly easy-peasy tutorials to make your very own Coachella festival fashion inspired bracelets.

You will need:
  • Ribbons
  • Beads
  • Scissors

I used some fabulous organic-feel woven cotton ribbon in 1 inch wide bands and then 1 cm wide for the smaller ones.

The beads you can see here are simple painted wooden beads. The wood gives just that little bit of extra grip and pull on the fabric of the ribbon, but you could also use standard beads and ribbons, just make sure that the beads are on tight enough to hold the bracelet on and in place.

1. Take your ribbon and wrap it around your wrist leaving two long tails on either side
2. Snip off the length and about 2 inches up make a simple knot
3. Thread on 4 beads
4. Leaving another 2 inches at the other end of your length, make another small knot.
5. Slide two beads at a time down to each end
6. You're done!

1. Again, wrap your ribbon around your wrist leaving two tails and snip off the length
2. Fold the ribbon in half making a loop, and roll the two ends tightly together into a little point. You will be pushing these through your bead, if it's a little too snug use a small flathead screwdriver or hairpin to help it through
3. Thread your bead on to your ribbon, pushing it up to about 2/3 of the length
4. Snip off the ends if they have gone to raggedy or creased & you're good to go

The beauty of these bracelets is you can customize however you want and wherever you want.... try different colour combos, different textiles... the (spirit in the) sky is the limit! Layer up with your existing beaded beauties and work some serious arm candy.

  • Adding beads and knots mid-ribbon before making the loop
  • Use lace instead of ribbon
  • Plait your ribbons before beading
  • Make your own jersey yarn from old tees in place of ribbon

I like the worn-effect and love frayed edges and distressed, well-weathered looking pieces but if you want to stop the ends of your ribbon fraying, simply seal with a dab of clear nail polish or some candle wax.
