Enjoy festival feels and sounds with these adorable Boho chic Floral Crown headphones made using double crochet, treble crochet and chains.

If you've got the festival blues after the  festival of all festivals... Glastonbury... you can still bring a little Glasto festival feels to your ears until V, Reading,  Latitude and Benicassim with these pretty boho chic crochet flower crown headphones.

I think these could be my favourite crochet project EVER.

They are super easy to make and as with all my patterns, there are no set rules! Pick your own colours, yarn weights and change up a stitch if you want to... make different shaped flowers...  I think too many rules and regulations squish individual creativity, and that's what makes Fibre Art awesome!

But here's how I made mine...

You will need:

  • Assortment of Yarns - I used DK from +Hobbycraft , stylecraft and +Red Heart
  • Crochet hook to suit your yarn - I used my trusty pink 4.5 mm crochet hook
  • Heaphones - the retro kind that go over your head.
  • Elastic or hair bobbles cut in half if you don't have any elastic
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Crochet terms for this pattern are in both UK and US terminology

How to crochet awesome festival style flower crown headphones - free pattern:

For the actual ear phone speaker part - MAKE 2:

Round 1: Start with a magic ring and chain 3. This counts as your first treble crochet (US double).

Make another 11 treble crochets (US double) into the loop.

Join with slip stitch

Round 2: Chain 3 as your first treble crochet (US double) of this round and make another right next to it in the same space to make a pair of trebles. (US doubles)

Repeat in each chain space. Join with slip stitch.

Round 3: Chain 3 and make two trebles (US dc) into the next space.

Move into the next space and make another 2 trebles (US dc).

In the next space make one treble (US dc).

Repeat this pattern of 2 treble (US dc) stitches followed by a single treble (US dc) around your growing crochet circle.

Join with slip stitch.

Round 4: Chain 1 and make a double crochet into the space (US single).

Make a double crochet (US single into every chain space around the ring.

Join with slip stitch.

Round 5: Chain 1 and repeat a double crochet (US single) into every chain space around the work.

Cast off with slip stitch and weave in ends.

Now, take your elastic, and weave it through every 2 stitches of your crochet circle as above pic.

Pull to give a little tension and tie in a knot.

Remove your earphones from the headband by gently pulling out the little metal prongs that hold them and slip on your little earphone covers.

Re-attach the speakers by pushing the little prongs in between stitches.

How to crochet the headband:

Measure your headband and chain a corresponding length of chain stitches.

Add one more chain stitch for turning.

Now make 5 rows of treble crochet (US double) stitches into each and every chain space.

When you reach the end of a row add one chain for turning.

When you have 5 rows cast off with slip stitch.

Now, place the work under the headband with seams facing on top...and join the piece with double crochet (US single) through corresponding spaces like this:

Don't worry about sewing up the ends yet, we'll do that at the end once you have a comfortable fit!

Now it's time to decorate!!

How to crochet the Flower Crown flowers:

So for the most part my flower crown crochet headphones are made up of this big petalled kinda tropical looking flower. It has 2 sets of petals and is perfect for squishing up all together to create a Frida Kahlo vibe.

The pattern uses a combo of loops and trebles to form the petals but with a little twist in there to create fun voluminous and pointy petals.

Round 1: Start with a magic loop and chain 3. This is your first treble (US double).

Make another 11 trebles (US dc) into the loop.

Cast off with slip stitch and weave in ends.

Round 2: With a new colour yarn, cast on and chain 4. Make a double crochet (US single) into the same space.

Skip a stitch, move to the next space and make another double crochet (US single) and chain 4, ending with another double crochet into the same space.

Repeat this pattern all the way around your work .

Join with slip stitch.

Round 3: Straight off **make a htc (US hdc) right into the loop in front of you. Follow it with 4 trebles (US doubles), all into the loop.

Now the fun part, you are going to make 3 trebles (US double) into the space BETWEEN your last two stitches.  This makes your pointy petals.

Finish the petal with 4 treble crochets (US double) back into the original loop and a htc (US hdc).

Put a sneaky little double crochet (US single) into the space between loops and repeat from **

Do this for all petals.

Join with slip stitch, cast off and weave in ends.

Round 4: Turn your work to start on the second set of petals. You can make these in the same colour yarn or a contrasting/clashing colour...

Cast on in a space between stitches...

Chain 4 and make a double crochet (US single) into the same space just as you did on the right side. Repeat the pattern of rounds 2 and 3 as above.

Cast off and weave in ends as before.

My crochet flower crown has 11 of these tropical style crochet flowers and the big sunflower vibed one you can is made using Aran/Worsted weight yarn or double DK.

To make the crochet rose and leaves:

Using 3 strands of yarn, chain a multiple of 3 plus 1 for turning depending on how big you want your rose to be. The longer the strip the bigger the rose.

Then skip every 3 chain spaces, making a htc (hdc), 4 trebles (US doubles) and another htc (hdc) in the 4th to create a wavy edging along the chain. In between each frill pop a double crochet.

When you get to the end of the chain, join with slip stitch and cast off tight.

Now you can roll the rose into shape and sew together at the back using a yarn needle.

To make the crochet leaves:

Again these are totally customize-able... make chain to the length you would like your leaves to be. Mine are about 2 inches long.

Add one chain for turning.

Then to shape them, start with a double crochet (US single) and 2 htc (hdc) followed by a bunch of trebles (US doubles) in each chain space.

Once you only have 3 stitches left, make 2 htc (hdc) and a double to form the point, turn your work and repeat on the opposite side of the chain.

Now all your pieces are made! It's time to sew together! Sew your flowers and leaves one at a time into the top of your headphones... smush them up nice and tight for lots of volume!
