How to make cute colourful Granny Square shorts, free crochet pattern:
Crochet terms in both UK and US terminology below! Enjoy!
Abbreviations:
tc = treble crochet (US double)
dc = double crochet (US single)
htc = half treble crochet (US hdc = half double crochet)
ch = chain
Step 1: To make these cute granny square crochet shorts you will need 4 crochet granny squares.
I'm a UK size 8 and mine are 11 rounds with DK yarn and a 4.5mm crochet hook. I don't like full on booty-shorts so these have a little room in them.
Once you have your 4 granny squares ready, you need to work the structure of your "undercarriage" ... or to use one of the worst words in the English language, the gusset.
To make this, you need to add 3 rows of regular granny treble crochet (US dc) shells as in the pic. Just join your yarn and work the stitches into the first 5 spaces between shells in the places you can see in the pics above.
Repeat on the undercarriage crochet section šššš
Repeat with your remaining two squares.
You should have a cross shape across the crotch as in the pic above.
Cast on into any space between shells along the top of your work and chain 3 as 1st tc (US dc). Make another tc (US dc) into the same space and crochet 2 tc (US dc) into each space between shells around the work. Join with slip stitch and cast off.
Step 5: Join new yarn into any space between 2 tc (US dc) and ch 4 as 1st dc (US sc) plus a ch 3. Now dc (US sc) into the same space to make a picot. Dc (US sc) into the next space and repeat around the work.
Join with slip stitch and fasten off.
Repeat the picot on each leg of your granny square shorts. You could also edge them with pom-poms! See how to make Pom-Poms in my Peggy in Pink mandala pattern by clicking here.
